Prospective members attend the monthly General Membership Meeting where they are introduced to the club and are asked to speak about their archery interests. After the meeting you will be taken on your Safety Seminar of the range. You will then be given your gate key and membership card. After the 2nd meeting you attend, your name is presented to the Board for approval and at the 3rd meeting you attend, you will be eligible to be sworn in as a full member of the Conejo Valley Archers. You hold all privileges from the first meeting you attend but are considered on probation until your third meeting.

• Safety seminars are held at the end of every monthly General Membership Meeting or by appointment. Your key is your responsibility and you will be charged $5.00 for lost keys. Do not loan your key to non-members. For the safety and security of the club and its members, always lock the gate at the entrance to the range coming in and going out, except during Public Sessions and range events. The main park gate should be left as is.

• General Association Meetings are held the 4th Sunday of each month, at 11:30 a.m.

• Club Shoots are also held on the 4th Sunday of each month, beginning at approximately 7-7:30 a.m., with a break for our monthly General Meeting. No shooting is allowed during the General Meeting and all members are encouraged to attend.

• Executive Board meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month. If you have items you would like to have the Board address, contact the CVA President at least one week before the meeting, if possible.

• Regularly scheduled work parties are not required, but everyone is expected to help out in some capacity. You can help by becoming a Board Member, holding a Chair position, attending one of our 'Range Beautification Days, or assisting with one of our invitational tournaments. If you have a special skill (woodworking, electrical, etc.) that would be of value to the Club, and we ask that you help by contributing any special skills you have. There are lots of ways one can assist us in helping to make the Club better. We request only 2 volunteer hours a month from members (you do not need to volunteer each month; you are only required to satisfy your annual working hours requirement for a Working Membership).

• Our monthly newsletter, The Conejo Quiver, is a great source of news about our club and archery events throughout the state and local areas. Submissions to the Quiver must be made by the 3rd Wednesday, or the 15th of the month to be considered for publication (whichever is earlier). The editor has final say on all items.

• There are also other clubs in the area that conduct various types of tournaments. These clubs are dependent upon our help and support. Please try to attend as many of these club functions as you can. Information on these tournaments can be found in the Quiver.

• You are allowed to bring a guest to the field range to shoot three times in a club year (October 1st to September 30th). As a courtesy, and to encourage membership growth, the club does not charge guest fees for open shooting on the field range the first time that a guest comes to the range. There is no guest fee or limit for non-shooting guests. You are responsible for collecting guest fees from persons that you bring to the range. Our guest fee is $3.00, unless attending a monthly club shoot, and then the fee is $5.00. All guests walking on the field range must sign waivers whether they are shooting or not. Place guest fees and waivers in the lockbox located at the kitchen bin kiosk.

• To learn even more about archery, it may be to your advantage to join the National Field Archery Association (NFAA), the National Archery Association (NAA), the California Bowmen Hunters and State Archery Association (CBH/SAA) or USA Archery (USA). These organizations promote the sport of archery through legislation and training. Most of these organizations offer various magazines and newsletters, as well as put on tournaments. You may receive discounts at many shoots that will more than offset the cost of your membership, as well as special group insurance. Membership may be required for certain tournaments. See our links pages for all website connections.

Our range is located on Ventura County park land, even though it is ours to use as a private archery range. The range is not open to the public, but to members and their guests only. Consequently, there are some important do's and don'ts that we must all follow. Failure to follow these rules can jeopardize our lease!

• NO HUNTING ANYWHERE ON RANGE!!

• No broad-heads or blunts shot on range, except in special broad-head lane/areas.

• No overnight camping or open campfires on the range, except by permit.

• No firearms or crossbows allowed on the range.

• No dogs allowed on the range at any time!

• No one except club members shall be allowed to have a key to the gate, and each member is responsible to see that the gate is securely closed and locked upon entering and exiting the range.

• No wandering off of the range onto djacent property is allowed. Our lease of the park property is restricted to the range area only.

• The Conejo Valley Archers club officers, representatives, and members shall not be liable for the actions or behavior committed by club members or guests under the influence of alcohol while on club premises.

• Consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited before or during any shooting activity on the practice and shooting ranges, and is only permitted after a club member or guest has finished shooting for the day. No glass bottles are allowed except in the picnic area.

• No smoking on the range except in designated areas. Areas with red "Butt Cans" are considered designated areas. Please use these cans.

• No controlled and/or illegal substances shall be used or possessed on the range at any time.

Any violations of the above restrictions can be grounds for dismissal from the club.

When looking for lost arrows on any of the range areas either place a bow in front of the target butt or have someone stand in front of the bales. Be sure that you do not stray behind an adjoining target lane. Children are not allowed behind the bales.

• If there is a Range Captain running lines, follow all safety whistle directions.

• Never shoot an arrow so that you cannot see where it will land, and never shoot an arrow straight up into the air. No sky drawing!

• The roving range is to be shot in a counter clock-wise direction. Never backtrack on the range.

• Never shoot a broken or damaged arrow. Be sure to check the condition of your equipment regularly.

• Never attempt to show your skill by shooting at a person, or by permitting another person to hold an object that you are going to shoot at.

• Never touch another person's bow, or draw another person's bow, without permission.

Remember, a bow and arrow when properly used can be a lot of fun, but can be dangerous when used irresponsibly. Protect our sport by being careful and safe, when you shoot.

Single Membership (18+) - $130.00 per year with 24 work hours OR $300 Maintenance Fee

Single Golden Ager (65+) - $65.00 per year with 12 work hours OR $180 (must show ID)

Family Membership - $160.00 per year (spouses and children up to 18 yrs. old) with 48 work hours OR $600 Maintenance Fee

Family Golden Ager (65+) - $75.00 per year with 24 work hours OR $360 Maintenance Fee (must show ID)

Student Membership (18-24yrs) - $50.00 per year with 24 work hours OR $300 Maintenance Fee (must show class registration)

Life Memberships - Honorary. Life Memberships are exempt from all fees and assessments.

• New memberships will be assessed a one-time $10 initiation fee.

• New memberships will be prorated as appropriate for fees and assessments.

• Each membership will be assessed a $5 key deposit. One additional key can be obtained for an additional $5 deposit for a Family or FGA membership.

• Each membership will be assessed a Maintenance Fee. That fee can be waived for the year, by the member(s) agreeing to the parameters of a ‘Working Membership”, requiring specific hours of verified volunteer work, per membership, supporting the range, for the renewal year.

These fees will be held in a Maintenance Account specifically for the use of range maintenance and shall be overseen in the same matter as all other Club accounts.

• Available volunteer work opportunities will be posted monthly on all bulletin boards, published via the Quiver, sent out by email or by any way as the Club sees fit, for proper dissemination of the information.

• All Working Memberships are required to work at least one 2-hour shift supporting one CVA hosted tournament.

• Members are required to sign in or contact the appropriate leader overseeing the area of their volunteer work completed.

• Leaders will decide how they wish members to communicate their volunteer hours using either sign in sheets, email or phone communication or any other process that allows the best communication possible for all concerned.

• Leaders are required to verify all submitted volunteer hours and to report these hours to the Volunteer Coordinator.

• Members are responsible for checking their volunteer hours for their membership, each month, as verified by posted hours at the Main Gate, email alerts sent out or by contacting the Volunteer Coordinator.

• All volunteer hours are required to be completed by end of the day, September 15th of each year. No credit will be given for any partial amounts under their required hours.

The Volunteer Coordinator’s assessment of hours worked will be considered final as of September 15th and must be updated or disputed before that date.

• Members who choose a ‘Working Membership’ but fail to work their required hours will be required to pay that previous year’s Maintenance Fee, plus the current fee and will be set as a ‘Non-Working’ membership for the renewal year for a period of one year.

• Further renewals of membership will be denied if the member fails to complete their volunteer hours under a second Non-Working Membership unless the above process is followed.

• Monthly General Meetings - Meetings are held the 4th Sunday of each month immediately following the club shoots. All members of the club should come and participate and approve decisions that affect the organization of the club.

• Executive Board Meetings - Held the 2nd Thursday of each month. If you have items you would like to have the board address contact the club president at least one week before the meeting if possible.

• Open House - An annual publicity drive for the club to inform the general public of our presence, our sport, and what we have to offer. We ask that all members participate.

• Range Beautification Days - Held the 1st Saturday of even months.

• Tournament Preparation Day - Usually held the day before one of our invitational tournaments. Help is needed is setting up targets on the range and prepping the kitchen and stage areas. Emails are sent out to notify everyone when needed.

• Target Pasting Parties - Usually held at one of our member’s home and are announced through emails to all members.

• Monthly Club Shoots – 4th Sunday of every month running from October to September

• 300 Rounds – Held most Saturdays during the Open Public Sessions starting at approximately 11 a.m.

• Fun Shoot – Held in October, in conjunction with the year-end awards ceremony, BBQ and installation of new club officers

• Invitational Tournaments - Held during the year at our range. Club members are allowed to shoot in these invitational shoots if they also help to prepare and clean-up for these events.

• Open Public Sessions - Held most Saturdays on the Public Session range, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., light rain or shine. Cost is $5/person for non-members or $15/family.

• Private Parties – Available to members or the public. Arrangements must be made in advance with the Private Party Organizer.

• Open House - An annual publicity drive for the club to inform the general public of our presence, our sport, and what we have to offer. We ask that all members participate.

• Open Public Sessions - Held most Saturdays on the Public Session range, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., light rain or shine. Cost is $5/person for non-members or $15/family.

• Private Parties – Available to members or the public. Arrangements must be made in advance with the Private Party Organizer.

• Public Session BBQ – Occasional party events open to the public and our members. All meat served has been harvested by club members for people to experience the taste of fresh game and introduce them to the sport of hunting with a bow.

• Keep the noise level down when others are shooting near you.

• Do not whisper while someone is shooting.

• Always load an arrow onto your bow string while holding the bow in a vertical position. Be sure that a loaded arrow always points downrange towards the target butt.

• No coaching is allowed during any tournament.

• Stay behind shooting positions while others are shooting.

• Do not touch the target or any arrows until all arrows are scored.

• Always shoot with a minimum of three (3) people in a group.

• Always shoot from the longest shooting distance first when on a walk-up style lane.

• Bounce-in shots do not count for score except during tournaments with a specialty shot.

• Witnessed pass-throughs are to be re-shot.

• Interference in the flight of an arrow by brush, tree limbs, etc. will be re-shot with a marked arrow.

• In the event of a mechanical breakdown (i.e. equipment failure), a shooter will have 45 minutes to make the needed repairs to their equipment. Four (4) arrows may be shot for practice before resuming their round. Targets missed during repair time will be made up at the conclusion of shooting under the supervision of tournament officials.

Field Targets (white-faced targets) - Four arrows to be shot from white stakes. Arrow has to touch line to count for higher score. Score five (5) points for center black area, four (4) points for center white rings, and three (3) points for outer black rings.

Hunter Targets (black-faced targets) - Four arrows to be shot from red stakes. Arrow has to break line to count for higher score, Score five (5) points for center white area, four (4) points for center ring, and three (3) points for outer ring.

Animal Targets - Minimum of one (1) arrow shot per target, with a maximum of three (3) arrows, to be shot from yellow stakes. Arrows must be marked prior to shooting (i.e. 1, 2, and 3). Only one arrow shall score and arrow must cut completely through a line to score higher value. If your first arrow scores, then you are through shooting for that target. If you miss, you will move to next shooting stake and shoot arrow #2, and so on. First arrow scores 20 points for a kill and 18 points for a wound. Second arrow scores 16 points for a kill and 14 points for a wound. Third arrow scores 12 points for a kill and 10 points for a wound.

Young Adults (15 thru 17 years old) shoot from the adult stakes.

Youth (12 thru 14 years old) shoot from the light blue stakes when the adult stakes are more than 50 yards. Cubs (11 years old and under) shoot from the black stakes.

FITA Targets – Score 1 through 10 points from the outer white concentric circles through to the center gold.

Tie breakers will be determined by gold X shots.

Freestyle Unlimited - allows for use of virtually all types and styles of equipment and aids, including mechanical releases, movable sights, scopes, long stabilizers, etc.

Freestyle Limited - same as Freestyle (Unlimited) above, except that mechanical releases are not allowed.

Barebow - No sighting devices or mechanical releases allowed. String walking (or multiple anchor points) is allowed.

Bowhunter Freestyle Unlimited - must use fixed pin sights that cannot be adjusted during a tournament. Length of stabilizer limited to 12" maximum. Mechanical releases are permitted.

Bowhunter Freestyle Limited - Same as Bowhunter Freestyle (Unlimited) above except that mechanical releases are not permitted. Fingers may be protected by gloves or finger tabs.

Bowhunter - No sights or mechanical releases. Length of stabilizer limited to 12" long. Must use a single anchor point and string walking is not allowed.

Traditional Bowhunter - recurve, long bows, and self-bows only. No sights, stabilizers, mechanical releases allowed. Single anchor point only.

If you are not sure what style you fall under, just ask.

Club Shoots are held on the fourth Sunday of each month. Most months have only four Sundays, so the Club Shoot is also the last Sunday, but a few months have five Sundays, and the Club Shoot is on the fourth Sunday, not the last Sunday. All shooting shall stop for our monthly General Meeting. Year-end awards include: Perpetual Trophy given to the member with the highest aggregate scratch score for the year, a Club Champion belt buckle given to the member with the highest total of five handicap scores, the Fred Leven Memorial Award given to the Golden Ager (age 63and above) with the highest total of three handicap scores, the President's Award given to the member making the greatest contribution to the club each year, and Range Record Trophies awarded for each style and division (highest scratch score).

Handicap Scoring

For the purpose of CVA club competition, you will receive an unofficial handicap score to help even everyone out. Our October “Fun Shoot’ does not apply to your handicap. Scoring for the new year will start over again fresh from the first club shoot held every November. Your handicap will be applied to the third score that you shoot during the club year. Assuming you compete in each club shoot, you would receive a handicap at the completion of the third shoot in January. Your handicap is determined by taking the average of your three scores and subtracting it from 80% of a perfect score, which is 560. That handicap is then added to your third score. Your handicap is then recalculated each month you shoot. As an example, if your three scores add up to 1200. Your average for the three would be 400. Your handicap would be the difference between 400 and 560, multiplied by the factor .8 (80%), which is 80% of 160, or 128. Your handicap score would therefore be 528.

If you are a NFAA member you will receive a Handicap Card with your membership. By shooting approved Qualifying Rounds such as we shoot each month at our Club Shoots, you can record scores that will allow you to shoot in tournaments against equal competition in “A", "B” and "C" classes. Without a handicap card (or enough qualifying scores) you will be required to shoot in "A" classes or Guest Classes.

To establish a handicap you must have a minimum of two scores recorded on your card within a period of one year. To get your scores you will need to shoot a 28 target Field Round, a 28 target Hunter Round, or a combination of 14 Field and 14 Hunter targets at an official tournament. The club tournament chairman will record these scores on your card.
